Women in Technology: Meet Takia

Marissa: Tell us your story on how you got into technology?

Takia: My interest in technology first began when personal computers were just starting to consume us, and I could see that technology would soon take over our world. When I was 12 years old, my mom bought a Windows 2000 computer, it was a DOS command only machine. From there I had an urge to understand how technology worked and what benefits would come from learning more about it. I could not get enough of the computer! From playing solitaire to using Word to compose papers, to AOL, to Myspace, and now to Facebook; technology has always intrigued me. 

Marissa: Did you always know that working in technology was what you wanted to do? 

Takia: I always was into IT, but things really came into perspective when I met an IT college recruiter while working as a retail clerk.  He spoke of a program that provided IT skills and a degree called “Year-Up”. I applied that year and was accepted. From there it was as if I was where I was supposed to be. 

Marissa: How long have you been with Dataprise? 

Takia: I have been with Dataprise since 2008, this year will make 12 years!  I would not change my experience at all, I have learned so much.

Marissa: Can you share a little bit about what it is that you do and what a typical day for you is like? 

Takia: Currently I work with one of Dataprise’s clients exclusively.  and I am onsite five days a week to assist with any and all of their IT needs.

Marissa: What is one piece of advice you would give to young women looking to get into the technology field?

Takia: One piece of advice I would offer to a young woman getting into the technology field is to have confidence and patience. It is very important to be passionate and to gain as much experience as possible.  Yes, this is an industry that is dominated by men, but we are just as smart, just as talented, just as strong, just as passionate and just as patient. Hard work and perseverance are what counts! 

Marissa: What advice would you give to women considering a career in the tech industry? What do you wish you had known? 

Takia: If you are a woman considering a career in the technology industry, do not ever be intimidated and do not feel reluctant as there are resources available that will provide great technical knowledge. Google is your best friend! Learn how to ask the right questions at the right time. Always follow good people and know we have to sometimes teach ourselves. The information is available, we just have to go looking. You always want to advocate for yourself and remember that you are your best cheerleader. 

Marissa: What do you think is the best part of being a woman in the tech industry? 

Takia: The best part about being a woman in the industry is proving the statics wrong. Yes, this is a male-dominated field, but I am strong, smart, and driven enough to withstand the challenge. 

Marissa: What is it that you enjoy most about your current job at Dataprise? 

Takia: The things I enjoy most about Dataprise is first and foremost, the Dataprise family.  We are a team and our efforts are put forth to ensure our clients have a smooth IT experience. Also, we are exposed to pretty much every level of IT and we mold and fold to the occasions. 

Marissa: Where do you see yourself going from here?  

Takia: I see myself expanding my knowledge and striving to gain more and more experience every day.
