Women in Technology: Meet Jenneh

Marissa: Tell us your story on how you got into technology.
Jenneh: Before fully converting to the technology industry, I worked in marketing. I loved being a content creator and became really interested in website development. Not just the final product, but also how to code in the backend and learned how data analytics could be used to study consumer behaviors and drive more traffic to the website. A manager noticed this interest and put me on special projects that pushed me to work cross-functionally with the IT department. Just being around technical experts, forced me to do more research to understand the basics. I took a foundational IT course that covered break/fix and networking and I never looked back.

Marissa: Did you always know that working in technology was what you wanted to do?
Jenneh: Not at all! My Bachelor’s Degree is in Communication Studies and Biology. I was in many science programs growing up and figured I’d be a scientist or medical professional of some sort! I guess I was wrong, haha.

Marissa: Can you share a little bit about what it is that you do and what a typical day for you is like?
Jenneh: I recently began working in our Security Operations Center as a Command Center Analyst. The Command Center is essentially the front line for all Dataprise Cyber operations, so I spend most of the day proactively monitoring client systems through various platforms and provide detailed reporting on incidents found and potential security threats.

Marissa: What is it that you enjoy most about your current job at Dataprise?
Jenneh: No two days are the same here. Working with multiple clients allows you to gain knowledge of various systems much faster than you would at many other companies.

Marissa: What is one piece of advice you’d give to young women looking to get into the technology field?
Jenneh: Technology is so broad, and you can get easily overwhelmed. Find the top 3-5 areas that spark your unique interests. Exploring the basics will lead you to the technologies, certifications, and skills that are best for you and your career.

Marissa: What do you think is the best part of being a woman in the tech industry?
Jenneh: One of the best parts of being a woman in the tech industry is that I feel as though I am on the cutting edge of new technology trends and am in a position to inspire other women to get involved.

Where do you see yourself going from here?
Jenneh: I am currently finishing up a Master’s Degree in Cybersecurity Technology. I plan on leveraging this newfound knowledge to help our clients better protect their networks.
